Autumn 2011
Dear Friends,
So happy to report that the Summer heat is behind us and we are enjoying lots of beautiful blue sky days and cool dry weather. I hope you are too!
You can always count on the month of October in Louisiana to have perfect weather which is why there are so many events happening this month. Country Roads Magazine's online Cultural Calendar is filled with things to do, including art exhibits, garden symposiums, fairs and festivals and the Angola Rodeo which has become quite popular.
What do I look forward to most in October? The 2012 Color Trend reports! Both the Akzo Nobel International Color Team and the Color Marketing Group have put together palettes of colors they expect we'll be seeing lots more of in the upcoming year, and thanks to Kate Smith of Sensational Color and Akzo Nobel's Color Marketing Director Barbara Richardson, I'm able to be one of the first to share the scoop!
2012 Color of the Year and Color Trend Report

The international team at Akzo Nobel, the manufacturer of our paints and now the world’s largest paint and coatings manufacturer, has selected “possibilities” as the dominant trend for 2012 “that builds upon last year’s appreciation, but also offers the exhilarating and inspirational idea that new options are waiting to be uncovered inside all those things we have reclaimed and come to appreciate”. I was thrilled to discover that the color they chose as the 2012 Color of the Year (Tea Dance) is the exact same color we recreated our full spectrum version of back in 2008. We renamed it "Mykonos Red" from our Summer Brights Palette for artist Hunt Slonem which was featured in House Beautiful's September 2011 Color Issue as "Colors of the Deep South".

According to the Colour Futures book by Akzo's color team, this red "is the most important colour for 2012 as it is at once whimsical and serious, dynamic and soft, perfect for a tiny accent or for a feature wall. A colour that can be many things to many people reminds us not to look for simple solutions, but to open our minds to new ideas that are waiting to be discovered." To read more about the 2012 colors of the year and the five key color trends for 2012, you can download a PDF of Akzo's beautiful Colour Futures book. Here's the link: Colour Futures Color Consultant Amy Woolf's Cutting Edge Colors Amy Woolf, who inspired our popular "Amy's Sarasota Sand" from our Designer Palette, recently shared photos of a newly finished project for a client who has spent time writing and teaching in the South of France and was looking to recreate the feeling of the colors from that part of the world. Amy wrote all about the project in her "Color aMuse Blog", but here are a few of the photos I just had to share since the colors are so similar to the ones in the palettes above. The blue in the photo below was created especially for this project but is available for anyone. Just email us, and we'll send you a sample. |
"I knew we were going to use a bright yellow in the kitchen and a deeper yellow in the adjacent living room. I felt strongly that a rich navy in the foyer would be a fabulous counterpoint to the yellows and it would offset all the white details of the stairway, french door and millwork. The foyer is also naturally the darkest room in this house. Contrary to what one might think, using a lighter color in a dark room will not brighten up the space. Pale colors tend to get shadowy and sad in a dark room. Though my client was somewhat hesitant to use a dark color in the entry, I felt compelled to give her a little nudge. She has come to love the color and says 'it's the most talked about color in her home'. - Amy Woolf |

"The desire was to find a color for the upstairs hallway that was both peaceful and a bit invigorating. Green has that capacity. . .to be a color of comfort, yet still have the energy one wants and needs." - Amy Woolf We created the custom green that leads to the master bedroom beyond that is painted in our "H2 Ahh!", which is an organic blue-green we originally created for color consultant Kate Smith. It has since become one of our most popular colors.

"A guest room done up in Ellen's Buttercup. This photo really captures the way the room glows! I have been working with Ellen's colors since 2005 and I can tell you there is nothing quite like them. The paints have a mirage-like quality in certain lighting. Regular paint looks flat on a wall. Full Spectrum Paints almost shimmer." -Amy Woolf Company News! Shades of White: Although saturated colors are quite popular, I am finding more and more people wanting soft, complex neutrals and whites. Just recently, Interior Designer Marc Charbonnet of MECA Productions asked me to make a "golden white" and a "silvery blue white". He usually sends me fabric samples to color match, but this seemed daunting at first because I had nothing to go by but his description. I have to tell you, they both came out exactly as you would expect and they are beautiful! I am in the midst of putting together a palette of whites as well as a small set of samples of what House Beautiful calls our "Colors of the Deep South" which are our Magical Gems, Summer Brights and a few saturated custom colors. In the meantime, just email us for samples and more information. October Sale! Although Akzo Nobel has been going up on their pricing, I am happy to report that they do have sales from time to time and during the month of October they are having one, so we are, too! We are offering $7.00 off per gallon on any Lifemaster product (flat, eggshell & semi-gloss) that is tinted at a "Glidden Professional" store. (Unfortunately, the sales do not apply to the independent stores that have replaced some of the Glidden Professional, formerly ICI Dulux, stores.) All we ask, is that you "like" us on Facebook and/or better yet, subscribe to my blog, so you will be the first to find out about upcoming sales! When you place your order, be sure to mention the sale. Although I have a reception service that takes paint orders, I get the orders right away and personally review each client's previous orders and place each order myself to ensure you are getting exactly what you need. Wishing you fantastic weather during this Autumn season and beyond!
P.S. If you enjoy my newsletter, I continue to write blog posts often, and if you want to be sure to hear about upcoming sales, subscribe to the RSS feed at Ellen's Blog.
